    • The Makigiaqta Inuit Training Corporation and NCC Development are partnering to provide $4.9M over six years for a training program for Nunavut Inuit. The program will train up to 90 Inuit to work in the construction industry.     • Adventure Canada is running an Inuit training program to employ Inuit in the tourism industry on northern cruises and guided tours. The program is an effort for Inuit to take ownership over how Inuit knowledge is shared. The Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators partners with the Adventure Canada programs and reports that there is higher operator demand than available candidates.

    • The Nunavut government is providing increased financial support to the District Education Authorities as of July 2024. The money will enable the DEAs to employ office managers on a full-time, rather than part-time, basis.

    • The Nunavut Teacher’s Association president reports that many teachers are leaving their roles due to violence issues in schools. Violence in schools is reportedly becoming more frequent, resulting in school lockdown measures and violence against teachers. From October 2022 to March 2024, 137 incidents of student-on-teacher abuse or assault were reported.

    • Natural Resources Canada project that expenditures spent on mining exploration in 2024 will increase in the NWT and Nunavut and decrease in the Yukon. The NWT will see a 27% increase to $143.7M, Nunavut will see a 23% increase to $267.7M, and the Yukon will see a 10% drop to $141.1M. In Nunavut, almost $450M is projected for mine complex development, while only $17M is forecasted for NWT.

The reapplication process will be a competitive hiring process for the estimated 50 employees working outside Nunavut.     • Fisheries and Oceans Canada provided a $6.5M contract to Sedna ROV Services to conduct hydrographic survey missions in the Arctic Ocean to ensure marine safety over the next two years.     • Exchange Income Corporation (EIC) opened a seasonal pilot training program, the Atik Mason Indigenous Pilot Pathway program, in Rankin Inlet for Indigenous community members.     • The federal government, Nunavut government, and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. finalized the Nunavut Lands and Resources Devolution Agreement January 18. The agreement transfers decision making on public land, freshwater, and non-renewable resource use in Nunavut from the federal to territorial government. Devolution is a step towards greater self determination and self-reliance for Nunavut.

    • The Canadian Institutes of Health Research and Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. are jointly providing $3.5M towards a five-year study on the possible use of wastewater monitoring in Iqaluit. The research project will aim to detect and prevent the spread of tuberculosis in the territory.

    • The federal and Nunavut governments are jointly providing over $194M in northern infrastructure, healthcare and transit projects across six communities. Projects include completing a long-term care facility in Rankin Inlet, purchasing public transportation vehicles in Pond Inlet and Resolute Bay, and new water treatment facilities in Sanikiluaq, Grise Fiord, Pond Inlet, and Rankin Inlet.

    • B2Gold Corporation recently released its renewable energy plan that includes building wind turbines and battery storage systems to power its Goose gold mine near Bathurst Inlet.
